Saying that he sent her four volumes of a novel that he is "strongly inclined to swear are the production of the unknown author of Guy Mannering" and musing on potential authors; inferring that she has read Lord Byron's new poem, and praising him as "a person of most wonderful powers;" reporting that he has been living quietly at home all summer, "working hard at planting and improving my little property."
